Just last week my granddad passed away. With working on my family genealogy, I thought it would be a good idea to start writing and sharing my memories of family members so that generations to come can read some of the memories I have of loved ones. My next couple of blogs will be about my grandparents.
My Grandparents
My Nan and Granddad Gubb were hard working people. They were both often sick, as in major conditions and operations. Nan had a major brain tumour at one stage, almost killed her but she pulled through it, had epilepsy for sometime afterwards which was an ongoing thing then years later suffered a brain aneurysm which landed her in the Life Care home here in Tokoroa, unable to speak or walk. Nan started to get better, could communicate with us in her own way, write notes and grunt some words, even started walking. One night, I think she got a bit confident, tried to take herself to the bathroom, slipped and knocked her head on the basin, causing another aneurysm and she passed away.
When my grandparents met, they had both been previously married and had families of their own. My dad was only a young boy when granddad came along, about 8 years old. Nan and granddad formed their blended family and bought a house here in Tokoroa on Esk Crsescent. The little forest products house was worked on and my grandparents put a lot of hard work, sweat and tears into making the home bigger for their family. My uncle currently owns and lives in the house and has made many building modifications to it himself, but it is a wonderful home and although I miss the home that it was when my grandparents had it, I still love it. Nan and granddad had built a self contained flat downstairs, 1 bedroom, kitchen, bathroom etc. where they lived for sometime until nan got ill and passed away. They were avid gardeners and they were always working in the garden, I mean all day and all night until there was no light left to work in. My nan loved being in her gumboots, shorts and a singlet. Even though they were ill at times, they were still very hard workers.
Nan and Granddad visited my mum and dad in the Islands, they worked hard even when on holiday. |
While looking through photos and watching home videos during last week when my granddad passed away, two things stuck out to me about my grandparents. First was how hard working they were, and secondly was how much in love they were. I know that now my granddad has passed away, he will be with my nan again and they will be happier than they ever were.
